MLHS-3

BAND

Welcome to the Milwaukee Lutheran Band Department. We have a variety of bands, for musicians ranging from beginner, to those who have been playing for years.

The Red Knight Band is meant for students with no group band experience, or for those who cannot read music on their instrument. The goal of this course is to transition the student into Concert Band by next fall.

The Concert Band performs at all major concerts. This band is open to all students who have some instrumental music background and is a full year course. Students must have had band lessons or group band experience for at least one year before enrolling in this band, and be able to successfully read music on their instrument. Emphasis is placed upon expanding basic music skills and increasing competence.

The Symphonic Band performs at all major concerts and festivals. This band is open by audition and is a full year course. Emphasis is places upon increasing the already high level of musical skills and increasing competence and repertoire.

Drumline is meant for students who are interested in learning to play percussion instruments, starting with marching snare drum, marching bass drum, and marching quad drums.  The goal of this course is to transition some students to concert band or symphonic band depending the students ability level by the end of the school year.

The Marching Band is comprised of every person in either Concert or Symphonic Band. It performs at the Homecoming football game, local parades, and community events. Most activities take place during the first nine weeks of the year, and in the weeks leading up to spring tour.

The Pep Band is comprised of every person in either concert or symphonic band. It performs at select home basketball and football games, and at pep rallies.

The Brass Choir is a group of students selected from Symphonic Band. They perform at concerts, chapels, and Lutheran High Sundays throughout the year. Its repertoire is selected from a wide variety of brass music, from Baroque to Modern. The Brass Choir meets outside of school hours.

The Flute Choir is a group of students selected from Symphonic Band. They perform at concerts, chapels, and Lutheran High Sundays throughout the year. In addition to C flutes, the Flute choir utilizes larger flutes, piccolos, and sometimes bassoons. The Flute Choir meets outside of school hours.

The Orchestra Pit accompanies the actors on stage during the music in April. Students are selected by invitation, and are chosen from members of Symphonic Band. Recent musicals included Hello Dolly, Annie, The Music Man, Man of La Mancha, and The Little Shop of Horrors.

Band Tour is held during spring break of even years. All Milwaukee Lutheran Band students are invited to participate. Previous tours have included trips to Florida, California, Texas, Canada, Jamaica, and Mexico.
